Description and Reviews

Key Take-Aways:

The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is a discontinued ultra-wide prime that Sigma calls the world’s first 20mm F1.4 lens, built around a 59 mm double aspherical element. Sigma’s page lists the L-Mount version at 1,035 g and 90.7 mm across, with a 95 degree angle of view (Sigma gives 94.5), a length of 154 mm (Sigma gives 153.75), a 0.276 m minimum focus distance, 15 elements in 11 groups and no filter size given, and Sigma’s US store prices the L-Mount selection at $899. Sigma makes no sealing claim. As of Oct 2026, six written reviews and thirteen videos are linked. Amateur Photographer’s Amy Davies called it first-class image quality with only minor negatives, naming the lack of weather sealing and that no filter adapter was available at the time of testing. Digital Camera World’s Matthew Richards praised the fast f/1.4 aperture, the ultra-wide view and the value, and marked it down for the 950 g weight, the integral fixed hood and the missing filter thread. Digital Photography School’s Rick Berk found it sharp with minimal distortion and quick, accurate autofocus on a wedding dance floor in low light. In his video description Matthew Eddy calls it sharp with low barrel distortion and good for low light and Milky Way photography, while Jesus Martinez’s description says it packs a great aperture but lacks many things, and That Tog Spot reports intermittent focus issues that he suspects come from the Sony body rather than the lens.

From Sigma:

World’s first 20mm F1.4 lens —thanks to advanced large-diameter aspherical lens manufacturing technologies

To offer an ultra-wide-angle 20mm focal length and F1.4 brightness at wide-open aperture, this lens incorporates a large double aspherical lens 59mm in diameter. Lenses of this type had been considered extremely difficult to manufacture, but Sigma took on the challenge to realize an F1.4 ultra-wide-angle lens that fulfills the strict performance requirements of the Sigma Art line. What made this breakthrough possible were Sigma’s advanced manufacturing technologies, which the company has developed over time by producing a wide range of ultra-wide-angle and large-aperture lenses. For example, milestone lenses such as Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM, Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM, and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art were completely original products that helped Sigma develop outstanding design and production know-how and its current high-precision, high-efficiency production system. In turn, these advances made possible the new Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art. Moreover, Sigma’s advanced optical design minimizes distortion, transverse chromatic aberration, sagittal coma flare, and the reduction of brightness toward the edges of the image. Delivering top performance even at wide-open aperture, this lens can be considered the culmination of Sigma’s Art line.

Official Website

Sigma has discontinued this lens. It is the predecessor of sigma-20mm-f1-4 (the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art): the DG HSM is a DSLR design that Sigma also offered in L-Mount, which is why it is large and heavy. Specifications are the L-Mount figures from Sigma’s page (the English page gives the angle of view as 94.5 degrees, entered as 95, and the length as 153.75 mm, entered as 154); the page shows no filter size, and the lens has no front filter thread, so the filter size is entered as None. The price is the L-Mount selection on Sigma’s US store (Sigma America).
