Description and Reviews

Key Take-Aways:

Sigma’s BF is a full-frame L-Mount mirrorless camera whose “most important feature is its simplicity”, in Sigma’s words, and it keeps its pictures on internal storage instead of a memory card. Three reviews (TechRadar, Digital Camera World, Tom’s Guide) praise the image quality and the design or build, and the same three fault the battery life; two (TechRadar, Digital Camera World) fault the missing viewfinder, and the reviews disagree on the internal memory, which TechRadar faults and Digital Camera World and Tom’s Guide praise.

From Sigma:

The Sigma BF’s most important feature is its simplicity. We wanted to create the easiest camera to use, inspired by the humble beginnings of the camera obscura. While the lens remains the soul of photography, the camera still profoundly shapes the images you take – directly, indirectly, even subconsciously. Without compromising on features or performance, the BF’s design cuts out everything that distracts from your interaction with the image. From its aluminum unibody to its simplified controls and streamlined menu, the BF embodies a pure photographic experience free of frustration.

Official Website

Current: Sigma still lists the BF on its product page, and no discontinuation notice was found.

Weight is 446 g including the battery, as listed by Sigma; the BF has no memory card, so that is the complete figure (388 g body only). Launch price of USD 1,999 body only is as given in TechRadar’s review (“The Sigma BF body-only costs $1,999”) and Digital Camera World’s review (“priced at $1,999 … and goes on sale in April”). Sigma Corporation of America’s launch release (republished by StreetInsider) could not be read (blocked), so it is not cited; DPReview’s page was not read either. The BF was announced on 24 Feb 2025 and went on sale on 24 Apr 2025 per Sigma’s release-date news, hence 2025 as the year.

The specifications on Sigma’s BF product page supply the other figures. The sensor is approx. 24.6 effective megapixels (25.3 million total). Dimensions are approx. 130.1 x 72.8 x 36.8 mm, entered as 130, 73 and 37. The lowest native still ISO is 100: Sigma lists base ISO 320 for stills, but the settable range is ISO 100 to 102400 with only ISO 6, 12, 25 and 50 marked as expanded, so the house rule of the lowest non-extended manual ISO gives 100. The fastest burst is the selectable 8 fps, in the electronic shutter, which is the only shutter type listed. Autofocus is listed as image plane phase-detection plus contrast detection, so it is entered as Phase Detect. Image stabilisation is electronic and for video only, so ibis is false. The fastest video rate above 60 fps is FHD 119.88p, listed as FHD 120p; open gate is entered as None because Sigma’s recording formats list 6K (6016 x 3384), UHD 4K and FHD only. The memory media entry names 230 GB of internal memory and USB storage for backup only, so internal storage is 230 and both card slots are None. The battery is the Li-ion BP-81 with approx. 260 recordable still images, which the page does not label as CIPA. Sigma lists a dust and splash resistant structure as provided, so weather_sealed is true. The USB entry lists UVC and UAC, so webcam is true. Sigma’s table lists no hot shoe or viewfinder, and Digital Camera World’s review names the lack of a hot shoe, so hot_shoe is false and evf is false. Sigma publishes no pre-capture burst function, so pre-burst is left out.

Reviews and videos are a full pass because the BF is current. DPReview’s review is listed first and was not read (blocked), so it is not used for the Key Take-Aways. TechRadar (Tim Coleman, 3 Apr 2025, no later update date) was tested on a silver unit Sigma loaned for one week, with no pre-production unit stated. Digital Camera World (James Artaius; page metadata gives 3 Mar 2025 as first published, with a visible update on 24 May 2025) states no pre-production unit. Tom’s Guide (Nikita Achanta, 28 Mar 2025, no later update date) tested it for a week and states no pre-production unit. All three reviews were published before the 24 Apr 2025 on-sale date, so they were written on cameras supplied before release (TechRadar states a Sigma loan); none states a pre-production, pre-release or early-sample unit, so they stay under the rule. Cameralabs’ “Sigma BF review so far” is interim with no final verdict and is out; The Phoblographer had no reachable review. Points counted for the Key Take-Aways: TechRadar’s reasons to buy are the premium-quality body and controls, minimalist menus and delicious image quality, and its reasons to avoid are no viewfinder compounded by the fixed screen, internal memory only and poor battery life. Digital Camera World’s reasons to buy are the jaw-dropping design, beautiful image quality, 230GB internal memory and that it makes you want to shoot, and its reasons to avoid are no viewfinder, fixed screen, conservative battery life and minimal connectivity. Tom’s Guide’s reasons to buy are the stunning image quality, accurate hybrid AF, minimalist design with solid build, smooth 6K and L-Log video and 230GB internal storage, and its reasons to avoid are poor ergonomics, no in-body stabilisation and short battery life. Videos with a paid-promotion notice and videos published before the 24 Apr 2025 sale date are not listed; the video descriptions state no loan or sponsorship and carry affiliate links only.
