DJI Ronin 4D-6K

Description and Reviews

Key Take-Aways:

The Ronin 4D-6K is DJI’s all-in-one cinema camera, covered here with the Zenmuse X9-6K gimbal camera and the L-Mount unit, which DJI presents as “una solución cinematográfica completa y vanguardista” for solo filmmakers. Two reviews (ProVideo Coalition, TechRadar) praise its stabilisation system and both rate the LiDAR autofocus as good but short of great or perfect; one review (ProVideo Coalition) also names the limited lens choice, a dynamic range a hair under DJI’s 14 stops and the withdrawal of ProRes RAW as drawbacks, and one review (TechRadar) praises the wireless monitoring and the price while noting that the remote monitor and the XLR expansion plate cost extra.

From DJI:

Sources: DJI’s English pages could not be reached for automated reads (dji.com redirects to its Spanish mobile site), so the quote above is the Spanish description of DJI’s Ronin 4D product page, which describes the Ronin 4D system as a whole and names the 8K model (in English: an all-in-one cinema camera that brings DJI’s most advanced technologies into a complete, cutting-edge cinematic solution for solo filmmakers), and the specifications come from DJI’s Spanish specification page and FAQ, translated here. DJI’s user manual was not read (the PDF is over 20 MB).

This entry covers the Ronin 4D with the Zenmuse X9-6K gimbal camera and the Zenmuse X9 L-Mount unit. The camera’s base mount is DJI’s DX mount; the L-Mount unit is an interchangeable mount unit DJI sells for it (DJI’s table lists the DL mount as included and L, M, E and PL mount units as compatible, the E and PL ones from third parties). The 2021 year is the camera’s announcement on 20 Oct 2021 (the date of the launch reports of CineD and Newsshooter); the L-Mount unit followed on 15 Jun 2022, when Leica announced that DJI had joined the L-Mount Alliance and introduced the Zenmuse X9 L-Mount Unit with it.

DJI’s table gives the main body as 235 x 115 x 160 mm, labelled length x width x height, entered here as depth 235, width 115 and height 160. The weight of 1450 g is DJI’s main-body figure (“approx. 1.45 kg”) and is body only: it excludes the gimbal (1.04 kg), the lens, the TB50 battery and the memory card, so DJI gives no weight with battery and card for the camera alone (the full set is 4.67 kg without lens and card). The price of USD 7,199 is the launch price of the Ronin 4D-6K Combo (main body, Zenmuse X9-6K gimbal camera, LiDAR range finder, main monitor, hand grips, top handle, TB50 battery and carrying case), not of the body alone; CineD’s launch review of 20 Oct 2021 and Newsshooter’s launch report of 20 Oct 2021 both give it, and so does TechRadar’s hands-on; the price was lowered in February 2022 when ProRes RAW was removed (Newsshooter headline of 15 Feb 2022, article not read) and is not updated here.

Megapixels is 24.1: DJI’s FAQ gives 24.1 MP effective pixels for the X9-6K (44.7 MP for the X9-8K). The sensor is a full-frame 35 mm CMOS with 14+ stops of dynamic range; the X9-6K has an exposure index of EI 200-12800 with dual native ISO 800 and 5000, so base ISO is 800, the lower native value. DJI’s Spanish specification line reads “Obturador mecánico electrónico 1/24 s-1/8000 s”; it is read as DJI listing the shutter as electronic (1/24 s to 1/8000 s) with no separate mechanical shutter range, so mechanical_shutter is false, and it publishes no stills burst rate. The camera has built-in 9-stop ND filters. Autofocus is entered as Contrast Detect because no DJI page names phase detection on the sensor and CineD’s review says “The sensor doesn’t have any phase detection points” (a source only; the review is not listed under Reviews, see below); DJI’s autofocus relies on its LiDAR range finder (ActiveTrack Pro, face and body recognition). The 6K mode records 6008 x 3168 and DJI lists no full-sensor 3:2 recording mode for the X9-6K, so open gate is None. The highest frame rate above 60 fps is C4K and 2K at up to 120 fps on CFexpress (6K runs up to 60 fps in ProRes RAW HQ, up to 30 fps on the CFexpress ProRes list), entered as C4K 120p. The camera has no built-in viewfinder (the main monitor is attached), and no in-body sensor-shift stabilisation: its stabilisation is the four-axis gimbal around the camera, so ibis is false. DJI’s FAQ says the main body is dust resistant but not submersible and tells users to protect it from rain, so weather_sealed is true on that dust claim. Media are DJI PROSSD 1TB (a proprietary SSD in the CFexpress slot, per the FAQ), CFexpress 2.0 Type B and USB-C SSD; they are entered as slot 1 CFexpress Type B and slot 2 SSD/USB-C, and there is no internal storage. The battery is DJI’s TB50 and DJI gives an operating time of about 150 minutes, no still-shot figure, so battery life is left out. Hot shoe, webcam use and SKU are left out because no DJI page read states them.

Current: dji.com still lists the Ronin 4D and no discontinuation notice was found as of 2026-11-05, so there is no discontinuation year.

Reviews and videos were a full pass because the camera is current. DPReview has no Ronin 4D page, so there is no DPReview bullet. Two written reviews qualify: ProVideo Coalition’s (DJI loaned Brian Hallett the 6K unit for about four weeks; no pre-production statement; mount tested not stated; no later update date shown) and TechRadar’s (Tim Bunn, a day with a supplied 6K unit, published before the December 2021 availability that CineD’s launch report gives; it states no pre-production unit or firmware; mount tested not stated). Points counted for the Key Take-Aways: ProVideo Coalition praises the four-axis stabilisation as the main reason to choose the camera, the built-in NDs, the X9’s image and skin tones, the monitors and the battery, and names the limited lens choice, dynamic range a hair under 14 stops, autofocus as “good, not great”, crowded on-screen information, wireless-mic interference and ProRes RAW no longer being available as drawbacks; TechRadar praises the Z-axis stabilisation and ergonomics, the wireless monitoring (“flawless”), the image quality and the aggressive price, and names LiDAR autofocus as “good, but not perfect”, the skill needed, and the extra cost of the monitor system and the XLR expansion plate. CineD’s launch review (Nino Leitner, 20 Oct 2021) is out because it says the firmware was not final; No Film School’s Ronin 4D pieces and Newsshooter’s launch report are news or opinion, not reviews; the CineD 8K first look belongs to the 8K entry; no qualifying reviews were found at Digital Camera World, RedShark or Fstoppers. Videos are non-paid (no paid-promotion marker on the watch page), in English and name the Ronin 4D as subject (DSLR Video Shooter’s description says “DJI Ronin 4D 6K cinema camera” and Lefteris Koutinas names the 6K; the others say only Ronin 4D, which counts for the original 6K model); DJI loaned DSLR Video Shooter’s camera for three weeks and the other descriptions state no loan, with affiliate links only. Philip Bloom, Corridor Crew, Vuhlandes and one Curren Sheldon video carry the paid-promotion marker and are out; CVP sells camera gear and is out; further eligible videos exist and were not listed. Product image: DJI render via Newsshooter; the render shows the Zenmuse X9 with the 8K badge, and the X9-6K unit shares the same housing.
