Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K

Description and Reviews

Key Take-Aways:

Blackmagic’s Cinema Camera 6K is a full-frame L-Mount cinema camera that Blackmagic describes as “an extremely high end digital film camera that produces precise skin tones and rich organic colors”. Four reviews (RedShark News, Digital Camera World, ProVideo Coalition’s Oliver Peters and ProVideo Coalition’s Michelle DeLateur) praise the image quality; four (the same four) praise the value for money, and three (Digital Camera World, Peters, DeLateur) fault the autofocus or its absence at the time of testing; three (Digital Camera World, Peters, DeLateur) say it is poorly suited to run-and-gun or handheld work, and two (RedShark News, Digital Camera World) fault the Blackmagic RAW-only recording.

From Blackmagic:

Introducing a new generation in cinematography! The new Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is an extremely high end digital film camera that produces precise skin tones and rich organic colors. The camera features a massive full frame 36 x 24mm 6K sensor with wide dynamic range, a very flexible L-Mount for lenses and a built in optical low pass filter that’s custom designed to match the sensor. You also get fast CFexpress media and the camera can even use Pocket Cinema Camera accessories! When you are doing cloud and mobile work, the camera records both deep bit depth Blackmagic RAW and H.264 proxies at the same time! No other camera includes this level of technology, image quality and portability!

Official Website

Current: Blackmagic still sells the Cinema Camera 6K (its product page and tech specs page list it at USD 1,755), and no discontinuation notice was found as of 2026-11-04, so there is no discontinuation year.

Blackmagic’s product page and tech specs page supply most figures. Blackmagic gives the sensor as 6048 x 4032 pixels, which is 24.4 MP by arithmetic, but its product page states still images of 24.6 megapixels (Lens Rentals also lists 24.6 MP), so megapixels is 24.6, Blackmagic’s figure. The mount is listed as Active L-Mount and the sensor as 36mm x 24mm (Full Frame). Weight of 1200 g rests on two sources: Digital Camera World’s review lists 1200 g and Lens Rentals lists 2.65 lb (1,202 g), which agree after rounding; both give 1,200 g without saying whether the battery is included, and Blackmagic publishes no weight on its pages. Dimensions are 180 mm wide, 122 mm high and 94 mm deep: Lens Rentals lists 7 x 4.8 x 3.7 in (W x H x D), RedShark News’s review gives “122 by 180 by 94” in the height, width, depth order it also uses for the Panasonic S1H, and Digital Camera World lists 179.8 x 94 x 122 mm with height and depth the other way round, so the height and depth assignment rests on the first two sources. The launch price of USD 2,595 is Blackmagic’s launch price as given in Newsshooter’s launch report of 14 Sep 2023 (“available now for US$2,595”); Blackmagic’s page now shows USD 1,755 after later price cuts (Newsshooter reported a limited-time USD 1,575 offer in May 2024), and Blackmagic’s own launch release could not be read. It was announced at IBC on 14-15 Sep 2023 and shipped that autumn, hence 2023.

Base ISO is 400: Blackmagic’s tech specs list dual native ISO 400 and 3200 (its product page says up to 25,600 in all), and Blackmagic names 400 as the native ISO, so the lowest native setting is used. Open gate is 6K because the tech specs list 6048 x 4032 (Open Gate 3:2) up to 36 fps. The fastest frame rate above 60 fps is 1920 x 1080 at up to 120 fps (Super 16 reaches 100 fps), entered as FHD 120p. Autofocus is entered as Phase Detect, though Blackmagic itself does not name the method: its tech specs page lists single shot, continuous, object tracking and face tracking autofocus on compatible L-Mount lenses, ProVideo Coalition (Jose Antunes, 10 Aug 2026) reports that Blackmagic Camera 10.2.2 adds phase detect autofocus, and Lens Rentals lists the autofocus as hybrid. The reviews were written before that update (Digital Camera World’s review lists contrast detect, one-shot, on the firmware it tested), so their autofocus points describe the earlier firmware. Blackmagic lists no in-body stabilisation (it records motion sensor data for post), so ibis is false, and Lens Rentals and Digital Camera World list no stabilisation. There is no built-in viewfinder: the 5 inch 1920 x 1080 LCD touchscreen is the only display, and the Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF is an optional accessory, so evf is false. Blackmagic lists no mechanical shutter (Lens Rentals lists the shutter type as electronic), so mechanical_shutter is false and no mechanical burst rate is given; Blackmagic publishes no stills burst rate, so burst rates are left out. The media entry lists one CFexpress Type B slot and a USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 expansion port for external media, entered as the second slot (SSD/USB-C); there is no internal storage. Blackmagic lists no hot shoe (Blackmagic’s specs list no accessory shoe), so hot_shoe is false, and no weather sealing is claimed (Peters cautions about inclement weather because of the open cooling vents), so weather_sealed is false. The battery is the NP-F570 included in the box; Blackmagic quotes about 60 minutes recording 6K RAW at 24 fps, which is not a still-shot figure, so battery life is left out. Neither Blackmagic page describes webcam use, so webcam is left out, and no SKU is published on the pages read.

Reviews and videos are a full pass because the camera is current. DPReview has no product page or review for this camera, so there is no DPReview bullet. RedShark News (Phil Rhodes, 5 Dec 2023) tested a review kit and states no pre-production unit; it could not test the autofocus. Digital Camera World (Adam Duckworth, 8 Jan 2024, no later update date) states no pre-production unit. ProVideo Coalition’s Oliver Peters (20 Mar 2024, updated 12 Feb 2025) tested a unit Blackmagic loaned for a couple of weeks and states no pre-production unit. ProVideo Coalition’s Michelle DeLateur (21 Jan 2024, updated 22 Jan 2024) states no pre-production unit and no loan; it was written before the autofocus firmware, so her autofocus point reflects the camera as tested then. All four were published after the 2023 on-sale date. Newsshooter and Blackmagic’s own pages carried launch news only, and CineD, No Film School, TechRadar and Amateur Photographer had no reachable review. Points counted for the Key Take-Aways: RedShark News’s pros are the L-Mount adoption, pretty pictures and the $2500 price (its standfirst: “it only costs $2500”), and its cons are the Blackmagic RAW-only recording and the imposing size; Digital Camera World’s reasons to buy are the full-frame sensor, great value and Blackmagic RAW quality, and its reasons to avoid are Raw only, no continuous AF, AE or IBIS and no built-in ND filters, with the verdict calling the AF poor, the machine big and awkward and the images superb; Peters’s pros are the great-looking natural image, the value and the ergonomics, and his cons are autofocus that hunts, not being a run-and-gun camera, a power grip less robust than the body and about an hour per battery; DeLateur’s pros are the colour science, the 3:2 open gate, the clean low-ISO footage and the accessible price, and her cons are difficult handheld work (size, no IBIS, warm base), unforgiving manual focus with no autofocus through the touch screen and no continuous AF at the time, a 30 minute battery run and proxy artifacts. Videos are non-paid (no paid-promotion marker on the watch page) and named the Cinema Camera 6K; their descriptions state no loan or sponsorship and carry affiliate links only. Product image: Blackmagic, shown with a lens attached (no body-only maker render exists), upscaled slightly from a 614 px source; the floor shadow was removed.
